I would curl up into a panic with no one to calm me down until I heard his voice again. But after that text from my dad, all bets were off.

I broke every rule. Turned on the tv. Went onto news websites. Knowing full well that none of them would tell me the one thing I wanted to know… if my husband was okay.

They had their makeup all perfect. Their hair done-up…

Some of them wore skin tight cocktail dresses that showed off their “goodies”….

Others wore a cute pair of sweatpants and tank top… and went for that whole “I’m HOT but I’m not really trying” look…

I got dressed up for Jay, too…

I did my makeup. Curled my hair just the way he liked it. But as I stood waiting for the plane to come in, I couldn’t help but notice…

I was the biggest girl there.

When Jay’s plane finally landed I was so excited I could hardly breathe…

My heart was beating out of my chest…

I stood there shaking… just waiting for him to come through the door at the crowded airport.

One by one I watched men in their military uniforms walk through their gate…

And their wives or girlfriends would run up to them and jump into their arms like something from a romantic movie…

And they’d kiss and hug and smile… And just go gah-gah over one another.

Seeing all these other happy military couples made me even more excited to see Jay…

And when my strong, handsome man stepped through the gate in his uniform…

I’ll admit… it’d been a while since I’d gone for a run… so there was a little more “bounce” to me than I remembered…

But when I got to him, he wrapped his arms around me…

And it felt so good to feel his touch again…

But that’s when the most humiliating moment of my life happened…

Because when he tried to pick me up…

Like he’d done so many times before…

Like all the other military couples around us…

And like I’d always dreamed of when he got back home…

I didn’t budge off the floor.

It’s like my feet were cemented into the ground.

I could feel him straining to try and pick me up…

And when he let me go and looked at me… his face was beet red…

Maybe from the embarrassment of not being able to pick me up…

Or the strain on his back…

Or the shock that his wife had gained 41 lbs during his 9-month tour.

And instead of one of those long, passionate kisses that all the other girls got…

It was nothing like the warm, romantic homecoming I read about in Nicholas Sparks books.

I thought I was supposed to feel better about our relationship when Jay got back…

After feeling him nearly throw out his back trying to pick me up…

And the look of shell shock on his face when he saw me in my new size…

I felt like he wanted to turn right back around and get on the next plane out to the military base.

Needless to say— that cranked up my anxiety several notches…

Before he left for deployment… Jay and I would poke fun at those women who gain a lot of weight while their husbands are deployed…

He said the guys in the military call those women a “dependapotamus”…

And by the time he gets back home… she’s a “planet” as Jay would say. But now…

And it led to us fighting like cats and dogs for the first few weeks he was back. And after every argument I basically followed him around like a lost puppy trying to make sure we were still okay.

We weren’t exactly getting intimate either… which was shocking for me.

But it didn’t pan out that way. Actually…

Those first few weeks after he got back… we were hardly intimate at all. Which really stung.

So I decided to try and get back in shape now that he was home…

Reverse the damage done…

And get down to the size I was before he left…

I swore to myself that when Jay returns from his next deployment…

So after I took him to the airport the next day…

And said my tearful goodbye…

I went straight to the computer to figure out why all of my old diet and exercise tricks weren’t helping me lose weight…

And seemed to be making things worse. And…

“Stress belly” isn’t a medical diagnosis…

It’s a way of describing how stress and stress hormones can affect your weight. 2

So let me explain how it works…

And in a minute I’ll give you a short quiz so you can know whether or not your weight, energy, mood… your whole life, really… is being affected by stress belly.

It all starts in the brain. 3

When your brain senses stress… any kind of stress…

Maybe you’re stressed out by a text…

Or a relationship problem…

Or a major lifestyle change…

Whatever it is, big or small…

Your brain doesn’t know the difference…

All it knows is when it senses any kind of stress…

It turns on a tiny “distress alarm”…

And that alarm tells your body to release a hormone called cortisol. Now…

Cortisol isn’t always a bad thing.

It’s a stress hormone that’s supposed to help you rise to a challenge. For example…

If someone were to try and break into your house while you were asleep…

You WANT cortisol to kick in to help you fight the intruder or run from them.

That’s what cortisol is made for.

But here’s the problem…

Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what stress is severe and what stress isn’t…

Which means every time you’re stressed… even a little bit…

So if you feel bogged down by your daily to-do list…

Or you’re uncomfortable in social situations…

And this goes on for hours, sometimes days on end…

Cortisol is constantly released into the bloodstream.

Here’s why that’s a bad thing…

Because when cortisol is released…

Your muscles and liver release stored glucose into your bloodstream too. That sugar is supposed to help you rise to the challenge… to give you energy to run or figh…

So it releases that sugar thinking you’re going to burn it off right away…

Most of the things that stress us out today…

Can’t be solved by running away (even though we’d like it to)…

So we never actually burn off that extra sugar in the bloodstream like we were intended to…

The sugar that’s meant to help you quickly beat whatever’s stressing you out… actually gets stored as belly fat.

And that’s not the only way chronic stress and constant cortisol release cause you to store body fat…

Because while your “distress alarm” is going off… your body focuses all of its attention on releasing cortisol… which takes away from supporting other processes that you need to maintain a healthy weight like your metabolism and thyroid.

Imagine you’re cooking dinner…

But you’re also multi-tasking a few other things…

Like chopping vegetables…

And talking on the phone…

While paying a little bit of attention to the television in the background. Sure…

You can manage all of these pretty well…

But let’s say the kitchen catches on fire…

What are you going to do?

You’re going to get off the phone…

Stop trying to cook dinner…

Put down the chopping knife for the vegetables…

And basically forget about everything else except for putting out that fire.

And that’s why even when you’re doing all the “right” things with your diet…

And you’re going to the gym five days a week…

You can’t seem to lose weight or lose it as fast as you’d like…

Because as long as you’re stressed… frankly, your body doesn’t give a damn about losing weight.

It’s main focus is to pump out as much cortisol as possible to help you overcome stress.

And that’s when it all “clicked” for me…

And I finally understood why I couldn’t control my weight while Jay was gone on his first deployment…

And why I just kept gaining after he got back…

Because while he was in Afghanistan…

I was under some burden of stress every single day worrying about him…

I was stressed that I gained weight… and worried that I disappointed him…

And when I tried losing the weight…

I got even more stressed because nothing I tried worked…

So my body just kept releasing more cortisol…

Making it feel impossible to lose weight… but very, very easy to gain weight.

And every function in my body that I needed to lose weight…

Like my metabolism and thyroid…

Would remain on “standby” until the stress was relieved.

They think diet and exercise is the solution for weight loss… and while it’s obviously great and works…

It’s NOT the first step.

The first step is switching off this hyper-active stress response…

To prevent the long, slow release of cortisol…

That makes diet and exercise feel useless…

And weight loss feel like mission impossible. 5, 6

And this is a universal problem for ALL women…

Not just women who’ve had a history of struggling with their weight. Because…

According to doctors from Yale’s psychology department…

Stress may cause belly fat gain in otherwise slender women…

“Everyone is exposed to stress. But some people may secrete more cortisol than others… and may secrete cortisol each time they face the same stressor…

And we predicted that reacting to the same stressors consistently by secreting cortisol would be related to greater visceral fat.” 7, 8

And researchers from Stanford University agree that chronic stress also increases the rate in which new fat cells are formed. 9

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
